Wheel throwing for beginners

Students start with the basics and learn how to work with clay on the potter's wheel. This course provides a foundation for making functional ceramics. No prior knowledge of ceramics is required.

Wheel throwing is incredibly fun and exciting, but it takes practice to achieve beautiful results.

Techniques in this course: wedging, centring, making small cups and bowls, trimming, glazing.

Hand building for beginners

Hand building means shaping clay by hand. Using the techniques learned in a hand building course for beginners, students create a wide variety of objects, from miniatures to cups and bowls, or small and medium-sized decorative pieces.

Hand building is calming, accessible, and a very creative form of pottery.

Techniques: pinching, coiling, building with small slabs, glazing.

Courses for

all levels

Some of our courses— be it wheel throwing on hand building—are suitable for all levels. Beginners work on the basic skills, while students who already have some experience with pottery can improve their techniques and make more refined pots. Everyone in the group receives the support and attention of an experienced teacher.

Advanced

Hand Building

Our very popular hand building course on Tuesday evenings is for advanced students only. Good experience with clay is required. If you have never taken a hand building course before, please start with the beginner level. Students who enroll in the advanced hand building course must be familiar with coiling, slab, and pinching techniques.

In this course, the instructor works with special techniques and assists with complex projects.

One-Time workshops

Not yet sure if a pottery course of multiple weeks is something for you? Or maybe you want to try a fun, one-time experience with clay? Then check out our One-Time workshops. Read more and see available dates.

A few clarifications which answer many questions :)

Extra costs

All regular courses include 2 kg of fired pieces (glazed). For shorter or longer courses, the amount included may vary.

For additional pieces (up to 5 kg per course), a surcharge of 15€/kg (fired and glazed) applies.

Planning
(applying to all courses)

A course consists of several lessons. Each lesson takes place once a week and lasts 2.5 hours. You attend the same lesson every week.

The last lesson of each course is a glazing lesson. There is no lesson the week before this lesson, because we need time to dry and bisque fire all the pots so that everyone can glaze them.

Example:

In a course of 7 lessons, the schedule is as follows:

Weeks 1 to 6: Lessons

Week 7: No lesson (bisque firings)

Week 8 Glazing lesson

The courses cost €350 per course of 7 lessons.

Shorter courses have a different price.

Make-up classes & rescheduling

Each student is allowed to make up one missed lesson per course. If a make-up lesson is requested and arranged, but you do not show up, it counts as a make-up lesson and no other/additional arrangements will be made.

If you know before booking that you will miss more than one lesson, we recommend that you book a course with us at a different time when you are fully available to attend.

The last lesson—the glazing lesson—cannot be rescheduled, regardless of personal circumstances. If you miss the glazing lesson, you will not be able to finish your pots.

Catching up one lesson is possible, depending on the space available in the other groups. If all lessons are full, you may not be able to catch up on the missed lesson.

Catching up is not guaranteed, but is offered on the basis of availability as a service to our students.

Please note that we only respond to requests sent by email. We kindly ask you to respect these rules.

Cancellations & refunds

To request a cancellation and refund, please send an email to info@theclaytable.nl.

Our specific policy for multi-week courses is:

More than 28 days before the first class, full refund minus a €10 administration fee.

More than 14 days before the first class, 50% refund minus a €10 administration fee.

Within 14 days before the start of the course, the tuition fee will not be refunded, unless we can transfer your place to someone on the general waiting list. In that case, a €10 administration fee will also be charged.

Alternatively, you can transfer your reservation directly to a friend. In that case, we ask that you notify us 24 hours before the start of the first lesson.

Once the course has started, no refunds will be given under any circumstances, nor can we transfer you to a later/different course. We cannot have flexibility on this policy for any reason.

If a class is not sufficiently filled, we may cancel it one week before the start of the first lesson.
